Our parents are the author of our born-life; God is the Author of our reborn-life. So how has it happened that Quakers today are convinced of their being rightly-led while convicting their Monthly Meeting of not being rightly-led? Such is just the opposite of early Friends' experience in the Life.

First Clue(via Chuck Fager's "Remaking Friends", pp. 67-8): Meanwhile, the Longwood Progressives gathered in late May(1858) for their fifth session. Joseph Dugdale opened the gathering with an early interfaith gesture. He noted "that Progressive Friends have no system of dogmatic theology, and no sacred books which they receive as authority, but that they accept what is good and true, wherever found. He then read...appropriate and impressive passages from the Hindoo Vedas, from the works of Confucius, the Zend Avesta of the Persians, the Koran, and the Hebrew and Christian Scriptures."
