"Thank you for your helpful and encouraging comments. Lots to learn and to read, especially about the early Quakers. We have a lovely group of people at our Liberal meeting, and I've found some Christian Quakers amongst them. All good.  "

Imagined Christ, Real Christ (a report on extended worship at Gathering)

Posted on 8th mo. 7, 2010 at 6:38pm 5 Comments

A long standing article of faith for me is that God cannot be captured by my imagination. The times when I have felt most uncertain about my faith in God were those times when I found myself imagining a God who seemed improbable, or who didn't act in the ways I thought God should. Or when I thought God's existence should be something readily demonstrable to everyone's satisfaction (particularly mine) and that simply did not seem to be the case.

But God does not need to meet any of the… Continue

Ice and power

This is our third day without electricity in Fayetteville, Arkansas, along with thousands of others in the region as the result of an ice storm. I'm at my office today (Saturday), as I came to work on my meeting's budget for this year. There hadn't been power at the office so I have been working from a coffeehouse at Hastings. I'm almost embarassed to admit how good it felt when I flipped the switch at work this morning, and the lights actually came on! I've been feeling a little depressed by… Continue

Hi David, thanks for your comment. I think the problem is more within myself and finding my way, not with my Liberal Quaker friends who have made me very welcome and have encouraged me on the way. It's hard to explain, but from reading, it seems that many people who are drawn to Quakerism, seem to go through this time of spiritual upheaval before settling to a transformed faith. I just need to understand how to continue to work out my Christian faith within a new and fresh context. This is a good thing, times of challenge are times of growth. Best wishes, Alison
