Starting to pray again-I.m outta practice

Hello: My family and I have been going to a Friends meeting about once a month for about 6 months-the closest one is 26 miles away-we like it. Although my wife and I were born and brought up as Lutherans, I have been a Unitarian for the lost 20 yrs aprox. I am out of the habit of prayer-but I know that many find it a good way to recharge their spiritual batteries. I have been praying for 2 min per day- I'm not sure who or what I pray to or what to pray for- so I'm been asking the Light- which I see as the goodness that is in everyone to fill me and then stay silent for awhile-in a quiet private room free on distractions.

Also noted online  I think it was Bill maher or someone who kids around who kiddingly compared Quaker Meetings to riding on a NYC bus-everyone sitting in silence-thanks Rich from Long Island NY

Hello, Richard Morgan!  I believe that the Great" I Am"  will hear your prayers, even if you aren't sure who He is or how to connect with Him.  I think it would help if you tried reading the Bible; see the book  *The Complete Idiot's Guide to the Bible* http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Idiots-Guide-Bible-Third/dp/15925738...

Hope this helps!

I found another book which should be of interest; it is *Christian Prayer for Dummies*  See http://www.amazon.com/Christian-Prayer-Dummies-Richard-Wagner/produ...

Neither the "Idiot" or "Dummies" in the two aforementioned titles is meant to reflect on the intelligence of readers.  I guess the words indicate that the titles are part of a couple of series of "how to" books for those needing more information about the topics addressed.

I have The Complete Idiot's Guide to the Bible and like it very much.  I do not have the Christian Prayer for Dummies (yet), but it gets great reviews on Amazon.com.

Even after a lifetime of prayer, I find these days that I need to be renewed in it. Like so many other areas of life, you never learn it all or "graduate." There is always something more, an aspect of prayer that I don't know about and need. I'm reminded once again that I don't have to figure it all out. All I need is the willingness to let go of what I already know and be open to what I'm being given. That guidance may come during prayer itself, or it may manifest itself in relationship with others who are on the same journey. Thanks for sharing part of your journey with the rest of us.
