QuakerQuaker This Week, Fourth Month 15 2012

Some post-Easter reflections on the Quaker Blogosphere. Patricia Barber writes of a Land of Saturdays, where  we've embraced the life and death of Christ, but haven't yet experienced the joy and certainty of the Resurrection. Brent Bill talks about the sounds of nails on Good Friday, and Micah Bales argues that Resurrection without the Cross is dead

  • 'Alumni protest has embroiled my alma mater, George Fox University, in controversy.'
  • "It seems to me there are three essential components to the Jesus biography: the teacher, the martyr and the resurrected Spirit. When we dismiss or discount one piece, we limit our understanding and motivation to act."
  • We can also encourage a dialog between Friends with diverse paths within Quakerism. I suspect that most, if not all Friends who participate with Quaker Universalists are part of the more liberal, unprogrammed branches of Friends. We can take the lead fostering sharing among Friends from the many branches of the Quaker tree. How can we be more inclusive? Quaker universalism
  • There is much we can do to promote community awareness of Friends (aka “outreach”), but I suspect the greatest effect of our efforts is internal–raising our own consciousness about how to be visible and welcoming.
  • I’d like to puncture the silence and compile a more fine-grained picture. I invite Friends across the continent to report on the state of the discussion of homosexuality in their Yearly Meeting.
