Barclay “Ex-Prosed”: Robert Barclay’s Apology as Poetic Prayer

As an alternative research project, I set out to capture the heart of Robert Barclay, the great Quaker theologian and apologist, in poetry. His systematic work referred to as his Apology outlines 15 propositions written to defend Quaker theology’s orthodoxy in the face of its critics, who often confused Quakers…

Accidental Friends

I suffer from chronic pain from several sources internal and muscular/skeletal. Yet, I am hopeful.   Sometimes that hope comes into doubt, as when you feel the impact of an automobile with the rear of the one in which you are travelling. It was our blessing that it occurred in front of our meetinghouse. Our pastor, Alivia Biko, helped me pray back through the new pains as I waas prepared for transport to the hospital. Beside my physical pain, I also was greiving the total loss of my…

FSMM on Northern Spirit Radio!

Way back, during the beginning stages of Friend Speaks My Mind, I got in touch with Mark Helpsmeet, the host of Northern Spirit Radio in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.  As far as I know, Mark is the only liberal Friend in the United States to host a radio program under the care of a meeting.  The intent of Northern…

Quaker Focus Week at George Fox University

This past week at George Fox University we have been engaging our Quaker heritage in a focused way. While our roots are Quaker, and there is still a strong Quaker community on campus, many of our students have no idea what a Quaker is or believes. Among the events we held were three chapel services, with the link to those found below. We hope you will engage these and continue to conversation!

Wess Daniels, pastor of Camas Friends Church, spoke on Quaker community as a Remix.…

On Quaker outreach, preliminary thoughts.

Before continuing reading this article, go to this youtube video. I've been a fan of The Onion News Network for a while now, they really do provide some good social and political satire. I do really love satire, because it is a superficial untruth that speaks to a deeper truth. Okay, so now that you've had a good laugh, go to the last few seconds of the video, and watch…

Jeanne B: A Modern Plea, on Friends Schools

Jeanne B: A Modern Plea, on Friends Schools. In my reflection I thought about the people I got to interview at fifteen schools before I had to stop the research. I found hard-working people with good intentions, people who crave excellence and equality. They reiterated some of what I already understood about Friends education: Quaker college preparatory schools supply a good education to students whose… Continue

Timothy Travis: The narrative theologies in Quaker journals

Timothy Travis: The narrative theologies in Quaker journals. This kind of narrative speaks from one’s own experience (and not from, as I say, “second hand” or “hearsay” religion) and, if one does not run ahead of one’s measure of light, this narrative will not incude unwarranted, speculative and divisive conclusions about the nature, character or purposes of God that are not part of… Continue

Book Review: The Concurrence and Unanimity of the People Called Quakers . . .

The Concurrence and Unanimity of The People Called Quakers As Evidenced By Some of Their Sermons is a collection of transcriptions of the preaching done by fourteen weighty Friends between 1688 and 1694. Originally published in London in 1694, under the name Andrew Sowle by his daughter Tace, it is being re-printed in its entirety for the first time in this 2010 edition from Foundation Publications, though some individual sermons have been re-printed… Continue

"That We Shall Be Made Able to Serve Him"

"This is the end of the testimony of the gospel of our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus, that we may all come to partake of His life, and that by partaking of it, we may live upon it, and being made alive to Him, we shall then be made able to serve Him." (From a sermon preached by Robert Barclay at Grace Church Street, Sixteenth of Fifth Month 1688. Source: The Concurrence and Unanimity of the People Called Quakers as Evidenced by Some of Their Sermons, first published by Andrew Sowle,… Continue

My Favorite Piece on Quaker Plain Dress, thank thee Caroline Stephen

by Caroline Stephen, from Quaker Strongholds, the Fourth Edition, printed 1907

"I believe that asceticism is in a very deep sense contrary to the real Quaker spirit, which desires in all things to abstain from any interference 'in the will of man' with Divine discipline and guidance, and which would, I believe, regard the idea of self-chosen exercises in mortification of the flesh with the same aversion as it entertains for pre-arranged forms of worship.…

The Meeting Community as a Musical Instrument

This week I was given a significant complement by my mountain dulcimer instructor. Of all her students, she told me, I was the one who put the greatest consideration into bringing out the full potential of the instrument.

Now I can't take full credit for this. My instrument was built by a master luthier. Years of craftsmanship went into everything from the selection of the wood to the careful placement of the frets to the delicate inlay. From the beginning, I knew that I had an… Continue

Are Quakers really interested in silence?

I thought I would go for the shock value here.

This from the newsletter of The School Of the Spirit-I am a graduate of the, On being a spiritual nurturer program-

Over the years the contemplative retreat has tended to incorporate more silence than indicated in the letter which was sent to Friends in advance. This posed a challenge… Continue
