The Witness of God

My Meeting has a private listserv, and I've always been in contention about it, saying that we should be discussing everything, and if we dared, doing it publicly, taking on all honest commentors, etc.

I post links to articles there that are way too radical for most of our respectable leaders-- because the content is true, significant, and urgent.

Said leaders complain that they "don't have time" to look at the discussion material that comes their way. I…

Seeking Solace, Finding Peace

I speak to thee, seeker of solace, not from a separate or superior place, but as one who has walked in similar shoes along similar paths. I sought solace, begged for happiness, longed for the seemingly endless heartache to stop and the healing to begin. I found peace, not comfort and ease, but peace in the midst of discomfort and dis-ease. I found compassion for myself and for others, residing in my heart, the Christ Within had kept a small hearth-fire burning, waiting in the depths of my…

Should Societal Judgment Be Time Limited?

The impetus for this post was a most unlikely subject. I've been recently deconstructing my own uneasy feelings towards disgraced NFL Quarterback Michael Vick. My partner, a native of Philadelphia, is a huge fan of the Eagles professional football team and is thrilled at the its recent success with Vick at the helm. When the dog fighting revelations surfaced, I admit that I wanted to see him banned from the league for life. Instead, Vick served nearly two years in jail, filed for bankruptcy,… Continue

The Christmas Zombie

The family gathered on Christmas Eve. Those in their 30s talked of

vampires and zombies — the latest craze. No one mentioned the birth in

Bethlehem.

The conversation turned to encounters with spiders, ants and snakes. No one mentioned Jesus of Nazareth.

I was quiet, numbed by the banter, the stories and the weight of my

years. With the Christmas tree glittering in the next room and the fire

crackling in the fireplace, I too did not think of the child in… Continue

An Open Letter to President Barack Obama, Christmas 2010

Merry Christmas, Mr. President, to you and your lovely family.

In your Christmas radio message you said, "many are fighting halfway around the globe – in hopes that someday, our children and grandchildren won’t have to." I believe that you were sincere in saying that, but I ask you to look at that statement in light of the facts of history.

Many of your predecessors said the same thing with respect to the wars they were fighting. People on both sides of every war seem to say… Continue

Freedom of Choice Requires Freedom to Choose

At Meeting yesterday, the subject of raising children found its way into the messages of many. Prompted perhaps by the presence of happy children singing Christmas carols early into worship, vocal ministry focused on the dual blessing and challenges of parenthood. Many moving, emotionally rich stories were shared. Each of them had a common thread, but each also…

Love and Unity

Instead of journal-writing in the tradition of Friends, I have developed the habit of writing down any worthwhile ministry I have spoken during Meeting for Worship.  I do this afterwards - which requires remembering what I said - so as to comply with the Advices on prepared ministry.  Some of these mini-sermons may be publishable; we shall see.  And some I will post here, like this one from today in Palo Alto Friends Meeting.

Love and…

Purity is in the Eye of the Beholder

The Quaker artist Edward Hicks is well known among the Religious Society of Friends, but less so among others. Though an adept and respected minister in his own faith, it is for his series of paintings that he is now largely remembered. The reverse was true in his own lifetime. One often considers folk artists like Hicks either charmingly… Continue

My Conflict with the Peace Testimony

A few months ago, as I went about exploring the Quaker blogosphere for the first time, I came across an blog post written by a Friend on what I think was on the quakerquaker.org website (I cannot seem to find it now). In it, she states something like this: “The peace testimony is not one of the Quaker testimonies, it is the Quaker testimony” (my emphasis). Lately, I've also been reading some articles lately about the general…

Vocal Ministry: The Inexperienced versus Experienced Divide

At my Monthly Meeting, a Faith and Practice from Baltimore Yearly Meeting is regularly read before worship. "The experienced speaker should be careful not to speak too often, or at undo length." Curiously, no mention of an inexperienced speaker is mentioned at all. As constructed, or at least presented in isolation from other qualifying statements, the sentence implies that only experienced messages… Continue

As the Spirit Moves

All these are activated by one and the same Spirit, who allots to each individually just as the Spirit chooses. - 1 Corinthians 12:11

Alison has been attending my meeting for the last 5 years. An elderly woman, she moved to Seattle to live near her sons and their families. I agreed to drive her to meeting on First Day.

At our first meeting, is was clear that she suffered from expressive aphasia.… Continue

In Peru

Last night I spoke at a little church in Peru. Twenty five people came. I tried to encourage them . . . to have a direct relationship with God and not depend on the pastor. At the end of the service the people were observing me interact with their fellow members . . . as soon as I starting calling the old men my father and the older women my mother . . . . they let down their guard to the stranger from the United States and I became their friend. The pastor invited me to come back again next… Continue

That of Each Person in God?

I've gotten caught up in discussions about "that of God in each person," and whether that means what it seems to, or whether it means what George Fox meant by it, and finally-- Is it true?

It seems pretty clear to me-- that God creates the universe from inside us, that God "lives" us-- that this is the only tenable explanation of how we can truly be alive: having God living our life in us. And yet, in some theological models this is seen as mistaken, as an illegitimate transformation… Continue

Reformers Should Expect the Unexpected

So many of our causes, passions, and movements could be characterized in terms of David versus Goliath, requiring superhuman strength to set right. At the outset, the odds are stacked against us. Business corruption must not be allowed to metastasize, lest the country be utterly eviscerated by it. Environmental pollutants must not destroy our fragile ecosystem.… Continue

The Quaker of the Olden Time

The Quaker of the olden time!

How calm and firm and true,

Unspotted by its wrong and crime,

He walked the dark earth through,

The lust of power, the love of gain,

The thousand lures of sin

Around him, had no power to stain

The purity within.

With that deep insight which detects

All great things in the small,

And knows how each man's life affects

The spiritual life of all,

He walked by faith and not by sight,

By love and not… Continue
