Should Societal Judgment Be Time Limited?

The impetus for this post was a most unlikely subject. I've been recently deconstructing my own uneasy feelings towards disgraced NFL Quarterback Michael Vick. My partner, a native of Philadelphia, is a huge fan of the Eagles professional football team and is thrilled at the its recent success with Vick at the helm. When the dog fighting revelations surfaced, I admit that I wanted to see him banned from the league for life. Instead, Vick served nearly two years in jail, filed for bankruptcy,… Continue

The Christmas Zombie

The family gathered on Christmas Eve. Those in their 30s talked of

vampires and zombies — the latest craze. No one mentioned the birth in

Bethlehem.

The conversation turned to encounters with spiders, ants and snakes. No one mentioned Jesus of Nazareth.

I was quiet, numbed by the banter, the stories and the weight of my

years. With the Christmas tree glittering in the next room and the fire

crackling in the fireplace, I too did not think of the child in… Continue

An Open Letter to President Barack Obama, Christmas 2010

Merry Christmas, Mr. President, to you and your lovely family.

In your Christmas radio message you said, "many are fighting halfway around the globe – in hopes that someday, our children and grandchildren won’t have to." I believe that you were sincere in saying that, but I ask you to look at that statement in light of the facts of history.

Many of your predecessors said the same thing with respect to the wars they were fighting. People on both sides of every war seem to say… Continue

Freedom of Choice Requires Freedom to Choose

At Meeting yesterday, the subject of raising children found its way into the messages of many. Prompted perhaps by the presence of happy children singing Christmas carols early into worship, vocal ministry focused on the dual blessing and challenges of parenthood. Many moving, emotionally rich stories were shared. Each of them had a common thread, but each also…

Love and Unity

Instead of journal-writing in the tradition of Friends, I have developed the habit of writing down any worthwhile ministry I have spoken during Meeting for Worship.  I do this afterwards - which requires remembering what I said - so as to comply with the Advices on prepared ministry.  Some of these mini-sermons may be publishable; we shall see.  And some I will post here, like this one from today in Palo Alto Friends Meeting.

Love and…

Purity is in the Eye of the Beholder

The Quaker artist Edward Hicks is well known among the Religious Society of Friends, but less so among others. Though an adept and respected minister in his own faith, it is for his series of paintings that he is now largely remembered. The reverse was true in his own lifetime. One often considers folk artists like Hicks either charmingly… Continue

My Conflict with the Peace Testimony

A few months ago, as I went about exploring the Quaker blogosphere for the first time, I came across an blog post written by a Friend on what I think was on the quakerquaker.org website (I cannot seem to find it now). In it, she states something like this: “The peace testimony is not one of the Quaker testimonies, it is the Quaker testimony” (my emphasis). Lately, I've also been reading some articles lately about the general…
