Sustainable economy for the future

Anyone else have a sense that christian discipleship is an answer to the materialist culture that is killing the future of the human species?

Do we experience the power of God to change us, to bring us out of old habits of consumption, excess, material acquisition, material ambitions? Do our lives show a "one planet" lifestyle, where we take only our fair share of the earth's resources, as a countersign against the excess and materialism of the cultures around us?

I get a… Continue

Of one accord?

I must begin by saying I have never blogged. I really didn't feel that I had anything that important to contribute. But , like many things lately in my life it's turning the other way. I find it hard to put into words the journey I have been on over the past month and a half. But, I will try because I feel God is leading me in this endeavor....

I began having some amazing dreams about a month ago. Dreams that at first made no sense whatsoever. Let me preface this by sharing that I had been… Continue

Am I as flippant as I seem?

Many times I hold back from writing because sometimes I am inspired by what may seem to be a joke or something similar. I often delete - hard to believe I know - because my tone may be taking away from others but I do feel that while many a true word may be spoken in jests many jests may be spoken in true words.

I do not wish to offend but sometimes - like Lear's Fool- is truth often spoken in apparent foolishness. Most of the Friends I know are not dour but that is how we may come across… Continue

International Talk like a Quaker Day

Friends, I am pleased to announce that Tenth Month 24 (10/24/09) will be the third annual International Talk Like a Quaker Day.

Basically, this is a day to use Plain Speech (thee/thy instead of you/your) and/or talk about Quaker principles, such as peace and equality.

Here are some examples:

ITLAQ Day is the 24th day of Tenth Month and it is Seventh Day (of the week). This day is also William Penn's birthday and United Nations Day.

I Lovingly, Respectfully Decline the Invitation

Galatians Chapter 5 (The Message)

16-18My counsel is this: Live freely, animated and motivated by God's Spirit. Then you won't feed the compulsions of selfishness. For there is a root of sinful self-interest in us that is at odds with a free spirit, just as the free spirit is incompatible with selfishness. These two ways of life are antithetical, so that you cannot live at times one way and at times another way according to how you feel on any given day. Why don't you choose to be… Continue

Quandary Queries for Quakers ;-D

I try to follow the Quaker testimony on ordinances and being educated in Catholic schools, I bear witness that the Catholics, Roman and Orthodox, have a lot of pageantry. I think the only health plan they had was the mandatory eating of fish on Friday. I still wonder what the fast was supposed to be in parts of the world where the only animal food is fish. Those days are long over.

I have looked over Kosher rules in the Torah and Talmud and Kosher products at the store, there is… Continue

art as protest

I went along to the Labour party conference in Brighton, wearing a tee-shirt which said, 'too disabled to be...a social worker?' and handed out the plinth poem, 'For those left standing' to a number of startled politicians to remind them that one in five of the UK population is 'disabled'...by society's low expectations of us. Various journalists also got the poem. Health should not be a determining factor in retention in any of the professions in England, as is currently the case.
