Tom Smith commented on Patricia Barber's blog post 'The Odd Man at the Dinner Party'
I will not spend much time or words on the topic, but just wanted to interject that exclusionary practices are alive and well even at the Yearly Meeting level. 6 churches withdrew from Western Yearly Meeting in the last couple of years (in VERY…

Tom Smith replied to Mary Lindsey's discussion 'Contemplative Quaker' in the group Liberal Quakers
To me the issue is not an either - or. As I read Friends history, as well as the Gospels, the "activists" who seemed to be most "successful" were often those who were quite contemplative. Jesus, who was clearly an activist at…

Ah, the remoteness. I have experienced that in some Meetings, but my own seems to attract people who are already active in working directly with houseless people, hungry people, and others. Missoula has its full complement of agencies who administer…

Tom Smith replied to Caroline Whitbeck's discussion '"Primitive Christianity", What Did Original Friends Mean by it?'
I have been looking quite a bit at what is going on in Indiana and Western Yearly Meetings with the essential "dissolving" of these Yearly Meetings and possible major realignments. Some believe they are the "true" QUAKERquakers…

Tom Smith replied to Caroline Whitbeck's discussion '"Primitive Christianity", What Did Original Friends Mean by it?'
To me "primitive Christianity" and the "long night of apostasy" refer to the "community" of "believers" in which they believed Christ was present in ALL his "offices" and thus no other prophet,…

Tom Smith commented on Tom Smith's group 'Virtual Friends School?'
I don't think there is much different about the "academic" (3 R's) curriculum but that there is a MAJOR component of the curriculum that lies in the classroom. Maybe adding a few R's might "fit?" Respect,…

I would like to know what is considered a general curriculum in an early-grade quaker school?  Aside from the 'Three R's' what else is emphasized?

Tom Smith replied to Forrest Curo's discussion 'Prophets'
This is one of my favorite stories of the OT. You would think that after such a great demonstration of YHWH's power over that of Baal, that Elijah would be emboldened. Perhaps because he did not accept that demonstration as enough but took it…

I would be very much interested in starting a reading list, by age level, and would love to offer whatever help and insight I can!!

Beth, The intent of this group was to provide a "clearinghouse" or center for just such activities as you have suggested. However, due to health and other reasons, no excuses really, the project has really not developed. It has become a…

I've been thinking (dangerous I know) about a Quaker homeschool reading list. My initial thoughts are that it would be a supplement for other schooling methods, including unschoolers. Eventually I would love to do something resembling a…

Tom Smith replied to Joseph Stalnaker's discussion 'The Significance of the Reality of Eternal Destinations'
It is time that Christians were judged more by their likeness to Christ than their notions of Christ. -- Lucretia Mott, 1849   I also think it is time that we spend more time in doing the "will of God on earth" than concerned with…

Tom Smith commented on Irene Lape's blog post 'Bible Study for Friends'
I guess my take on the "second Adam" is slightly different in some ways. I believe that one of the reasons that George Fox used the Genesis/Adam reference so much was because the church of his day used "The Fall" as…

To Whom Do We Listen?

To Whom Do We Listen?    by Tom Smith        Quaker Life, March 1979, p.19

You have heard that it has been said, an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth: But I say unto you that you resist not evil, but whosoever shall build up their nuclear weapons, take down all your defensive weapons. And if any man will sue you at the law to obtain open housing, offer your help in buying him a house in your neighborhood. And whosoever shall compel you to work eight hours a day, work for him… Continue

Myth of Midwestern Quakerism

I have uncovered some older writings that I will post on the blog "Seeker of Truth and Reality" occasionally as a "track record" of my own search.

This was written and read in 1969, at the age of 25, when I was Clerk of West Branch Quarterly Meeting in Indiana Yearly Meeting. IYM was reorganizing from Quarterly to Regional Meetings and this was the last Meeting of West Branch QM. Most of my current views are remarkably similar 40 years later. This… Continue

Thanks for telling me about yourself, Tom! I'm a homeschooling mom with 3 kids. I'd like to learn more about your virtual school. I was raised Catholic in a mixed catholic/jewish household where neither of my parents were actually believers. I went back to the church as an adult and became converted then. About 7 years ago I felt commanded ("led" is really too weak a word) to leave and try the local Friends Meeting, which is unprogrammed and liberal. I love my meeting and I'm also very interested in learning more about and participating in this convergent movement.

Daily Bible Reading: Deuteronomy 28 and Galatians 6

Deuteronomy 28 – If you obey the voice of God by observing the law, you will prosper.  Disobedience will bring destruction (28:45). The big word in this chapter, as in others, is if or “provided” or “so long as.”  This is the great condition that hangs over the redemption people.  The word does not disappear under the new covenant either as we sometimes like to think.  “You are my friends if you do as I command you.” (John 15:14).  The convincing power of the gospel is not in its syllogistic…See More

Where ministry meets livelihood

Listen to this post: http://www.turtleboxstories.com/audio/whereministrymeets.mp3 Yesterday was sandwiched between a traditional Bible study and a new women's group on astrology and archetypes. Could I have chosen anything more different? One is an ongoing study of Luke that my mother initiated in December with, mostly, retired women. I felt called to join because when else might I have the chance to do a Bible study…See More
