Thanks, Patricia, for your beacon of Truth.  What doesn't get said much anymore is that the Quaker understanding of Christ predates (and sidesteps) the confessions of faith that have come to define the faith in the wider community. …

Pray. That is between you and God. What do Truth and Love require? I know of times when Friends have stayed in a difficult situation because faithfulness required it, and other times when going somewhere else was the right thing to do. And the…

This seems to imply that any part of "The Religious Society of Friends" that does not seek "to enable its members to be more faithful to God" has no justification for existing. I suppose one can be "enabled to be more…

The question had to do with justifying the structure of the Religious Society of Friends and I took it as an opportunity to consider the functions and purposes which that structure should serve. Forrest, you are right that faithfulness is not…

I think it's our perception of God that's changed, as we came into closer understanding of what God was like all along... And I don't think it's only our members we're supposed to bring closer to God; what would GF…

Roger, I have found your proposal to be true in my life. Being a member of the Religious Society of Friends has, indeed, enabled me to be more faithful to God. In worship and interaction with Ffriends, I discover more precisely what exactly what…

The basis and structure of The Religious Society of Friends

My proposal is that the Religious Society of Friends exists to enable its members to be more faithful to God. It exists because God is the Creator and We are Creatures, part of a broader Creation for which we are (in the image of God) stewards. Each of us has the overwhelming task of discerning our place in the creation and our responsibility as stewards. It's understandable that the most common response to this reality is denial but Friends proclaim the good news that God loves us and wants…See More

From Commandment to Declaration

On the occasion of my conviction as a Christian I was given a song: Abba, I love thee with all my heart/Abba, I love thee with all my soul. Abba, I love thee with all my strength/Abba, thy will be done. Give us today our daily bread/Abba, I love thee with all my soul. And do not put me to the test/Abba, thy will be done. Abba, thy will be done.During worship this week I realized that with the coming of Christ, and for Christians, what had been a commandment - You shall love the Lord, your God…See More

Publicity Works - or at least gets noticed

4 meetings that are doing Quaker Quest in Philadelphia had announcements on public radio and several people came up to me - I was wearing my standard plain blue shirt with the collar button closed - and commented on it. From what they said I conclude that Quakers are known and admired, and that a friendly invitation to a Quaker Quest type event will get a positive response.See More

The more familiar "Our Father" in Matthew - and echoed in Luke (but not Mark) - is a basic teaching from the beginning of Jesus' ministry. John 17 is at the end (John 18 and 19 are the Passion), and this is John - the gospel written…

This seems considerably longer, more ornate, and full of theological opinion than the more familiar prayer credited to Jesus and found in the synoptics.

I truly regret that I can't come to the Convergent Friends worship in Seattle. I have a previous commitment that I can't break. I did contact other Friends who may be interested.

Hi Roger: so glad to see you here. You might remember me as a participant at the FGC Gathering workshop on the Bible that you led circa 2001. Who's Richard Davies I wonder, look forward to learning more when that's ready.

Thanks for your gratulations and your input. Homeschooling is by virtue of our new curriculum very hard, something I even as a teacher am very critical about. I think that most people do not understand that there are many pros to it and think it is…

Called Out, Called In: Maggie Harrison's Loving Challenge

There is a prophet in our midst, and her name is Maggie Harrison. Rousing many like fire, making my skin itch at being possibly excluded from this club that I don't even belong to, really (when asked if I am a Quaker, I always respond, 'Not yet.'), but want to think I can put on and off like so much-- clothing? And, nakedness. Taking off the mantle of Religious Identity, making space for the un-knowingness of living INTO something, removing armor and scaffold and hard won (or not so hard won)…See More
