Nikolas Southwell replied to Jess Easter's discussion 'Can one be Quaker and Jewish?' in the group Liberal Quakers
I totaly disagree that as you put it "Both traditional Judaism and traditional Quakerism have their own gods and they aren't the same. So I guess the question comes down to, do you have a relationship with God and if so, who is that…

Personaly I would not be against humanitarian military i ntervention, as long as it was approved and carried out by  the UN, and not by one specific country (like America). I dont have a problem with  use of force if there is no other way…

David, your experience mirrors mine! And, indeed, I did run away, for an entire year, but knew during that time that I had to return. I did a lot of study and interior work during that year. And this was a gentle meeting that generally spoke…

Nikolas, if you genuinely want to understand why nontheists come to meeting, they have written extensively on that topic on the web.  There should be no shortage of material if you want to seek it out. would be a place to start.  In…

I also agree with Richard and Paula. As I said in my earlier, we need open, tolerant discussion so that all sides can have clarity.

I think Richard has said it best, but Paula also raises a good point.  We don't want to drive away genuine seekers. But I feel that we must at all costs, as Richard said, maintain that we are a religious society, and that we…

Yes, Richard. Thank you. We are responsible for the tone set in worship. And I hope that an a-theist attender who applies for membership is asked careful, loving questions, and listened to deeply. The goal would be to ascertain whether the…

I would say that it is good to offer hospitality and welcome to atheists who are drawn to meeting.  After all, it is likely that they are being drawn by the God they don't consciously believe in.  But it is important that we quietly…

Yes, Nikolas, your experience, and Stephanie's, are examples of intolerance. Distressing. I feel a concern about using nontheism as a reason for withholding membership. Given the trouble we all have with language and making sense of our…

I would like to say that I would not ban nontheists from attending, but only from joining the Society. In my own experience i have experienced being told that religion was a "fantasy" by a "nontheist" in one meeting, in response…

Dear Friends, The question is, "where do we draw the line?" I have my idea of where it should be drawn, but I wish to say how glad I am that the line was not drawn for me at "a-theism/non-theism/agnostic." I was raised agnostic,…

I am very fortunate in belonging to a liberal meeting that has been completely accepting of Christian ministry from me, so I don't know that I can answer your question, Nicholas, about meetings where there is a majority that doesn't accept…

Where is the line drawn?

Since the RELIGIOUS (emphasis mine) Society of Friends now welcomes "non-thesist" members, will it also open up to military quakers, or hedonistic quakers or to any other group of people who want to join without changing anything about their lifestyle or beliefs? I'm  not trying to offend anyone, but I cant really understand the point of joining the RELIGIOUS Society of Friends, if you are irreligious. Surley joining the humanist society, or something similar would be more appropriate?…

Trusting the Scriptures?

Given that Friends reject much of the descisions of the early Church councils (Nicea etc.). Why then do we agree to the scriptures decided upon by the Church councils. What about those expressions of the early church the Shepard of Hermas and the Gospel of Thomas? What about the Peshitta (the Arimaic bible) used in the Indian and Syriac churches? It is said to be far older than the Greek bible we have in the west, and it does NOT include Revelation (thank goodness i hear you cry!) or John… Continue

Have you come across Gwyn, Dandelion & Peat's book "Heaven on earth: Quakers and the second coming"? I think it is a great introduction to Quaker theology.

Hi Nikolas! Welcome to QuakerQuaker. I assume you're the fellow that was in contact with Bruce Bishop in Northwest Yearly Meeting asking for Christian Friends in Cornwall? He passed the inquiry on to me and there's been a bit of a small flurry of emails and Facebook postings. Here on QQ, Raye posted a list of locations of Ohio Yearly Meeting Friends in response to the emails--many Christian Friends throughout the world have affiliated with Ohio and it serves as a kind of international network. I know AliceMYaxley has also been making inquiries for you and she's here too, so you might check with her if you haven't already made contact.

As the publisher of QQ, do let me know any ideas you have. I'd like this to serve as a place where Christian Friends and seekers can find one another across the distances. We're still figuring out the actual mechanics to that and any suggestions are welcome.

Called Out, Called In: Maggie Harrison's Loving Challenge

There is a prophet in our midst, and her name is Maggie Harrison. Rousing many like fire, making my skin itch at being possibly excluded from this club that I don't even belong to, really (when asked if I am a Quaker, I always respond, 'Not yet.'), but want to think I can put on and off like so much-- clothing? And, nakedness. Taking off the mantle of Religious Identity, making space for the un-knowingness of living INTO something, removing armor and scaffold and hard won (or not so hard won)…See More

Plain babies and children

I am expecting a baby if everything goes well this summer. I just want to hear if there are any thoughts about teaching and showing the plain way to children. The table is open and I just want to hear what you think about this, is it even possible in today's society to raise children like that?As both me and my partner wear mainly clothes of a modern make we will buy 'normal' clothes for our children but try buy a lot of things second hand or try to swap them with others. When our child is a…See More

Daily Bible Reading: Deuteronomy 32 and 1 Corinthians 5

Deuteronomy 32 – The Song of Moses [the number of verses equals the number of letters in the Hebrew alphabet – 23 - times 3. It concludes the teaching books of the Old Testament: “my teaching will fall like drops of rain and form on the earth like dew. My words will fall like showers on young plants, like gentle rain on tender grass” (32:2). From the beginning, the Judeo-Christian vision has been that we humans are here on earth as creations of a “mighty,” “just” and “perfect” God, who seeks…See More
