"In the context of the word "antisemite," yes, it definitely is a synonym for Jewish. My understanding is that the word "antisemitic" was coined by the Nazis to describe themselves."

Quaker survey, beliefs into practice

Posted on 1st mo. 6, 2016 at 2:20pm 0 Comments

Hey folks,

Over on the Quakerism subreddit, a student showed up with a list of questions they needed to ask Quakers about our beliefs and how we put those beliefs into action. I suggested they make a form that could be shared around on here, Twitter, etc. since there are way more Quakers not-on-Reddit than on Reddit. They obliged. Here are their questions

Elias Hicks, reason/rationalism, and some atonement theory

In response to this thread I looked up  a bunch of stuff in "Elias Hicks: Quaker Liberal" about Hicks and reason/rationalism, his influences, and how that influenced his theology, because I mentioned his use of reason being criticized in his life and was asked for sources. Here are selected excerpts . I'm only posting one of them in that thread.

Elias Hicks on what is required of a Christian

Posted on 10th mo. 22, 2015 at 10:51am 2 Comments

I recently got my own copy of "Elias Hicks: Quaker Liberal," a book I borrowed from my university's library but did not finish before graduating and returning the book.  On page 186, it says that the last page of Hicks' home journal finally answered a question both Friends and non-Friends frequently asked:  what is required of a Christian?  His answer has 3 parts.

  1. a real belief in God and Christ, as one undivided essence, known and believed in, inwardly…

Hi Mackenzie!

I just started listening to your podcast, it's great! I find it really informative as a new Quaker attender. I grew up Catholic too, and appreciate your references to the Catholic faith. Just curious, what led you to wear your head covering? I attend a liberal meeting, but I love plain dress and am interested in learning more about it!

Best,

Annie

Dear MacKenzie,

Re Aikido:

In a recent discussion, you wrote,  "and then I lay you gently down."

Love it, love it. In my experience, God practices Aikido.  :)

Yours in the Light, Paula
