Kristen McLewin replied to Barbara Smith's discussion 'Plain or modest dress, shoes, stockings and leg covering for women?' in the group Plainness & Simplicity
I live in a windy/wet climate that does tend to have a couple of fairly cold months each year.  I wear long skirts (between the bottom of my calf and my ankle) year-round.  In summer, I wear lightweight nearly knee-length shorts underneath…

I'm enjoying the discussion!  I wear modern plain with a headcovering.  I stick mainly to navy, brown, and dark green.  Any subdued, darker color seems right to me.  I do wear black shoes, stockings, and coats because they…

Kevin, I'm a plain-dressing Quaker lesbian.  Welcome to my world.  :)  I don't have much time to chat now, but wanted to offer support and some understanding and an invitation to chat.  I don't live in a big urban…

I don't use tights.  In the winter I wear black long underwear and black wool knee socks.  They both last a good while and are easier to put on.  :)

Greetings.   I dress modern plain -- long skirts and matching tops, mainly in brown, darker blues, and darker greens.  My hair is fine and straight, and just past my shoulders.  I wear it in a low ponytail, braid, or bun with a plain…

Friends camps for children

Thumbnail
Iam researching camps for my son for this summer.  We live on the west coast (USA), so this can be a bit challenging.  I am wondering if I've missed any FGC/universalist type camps within WA, OR or ID?  Anyone have ideas? My son is 10 and has some special needs, so flying far from home for camp is unrealistic.  If he is well enough, we hope to take his first big trip to the FGC Gathering in Iowa this summer.See More

I work 3rd day through 7th day, closing shift, but I'm a nightowl anyway. Hmm,a walk in the forest sounds nice, especially for an urbanite. The closest I get to animals is my 3 cats. I was drawn to the Friends by silence, simplicity, peace, and…

I wear a plain, navy bandana with my hair tied back.  I've been covering with this or a thick headband (the headbands were at first... the scarf/bandanas are every day now) for about two years.  I cover at all times outside of the…

Hello, Kristen,

Just a quick note in regarding your question about the Gathering. I posted a comment in response to Isabel's question about what the Gathering is. But I should clarify to you that I am not classic plain dressing, just "modern" plain.

I did see other modern plain dressers last year, but I don't recall any who dress with bonnets. But there were a lot of people there, so I could have missed some.

Yours, Paula

Thank you so much, Kristen! I am actually a chirch musician, and I attend St. Hilda & St. Patrick. I am, however, incorporating Quaker worship and priniciples into my faith journey. I like the silence and commitment to peace rhat the Friends offer. Do you go to meeting where you live? It might be fun to meet for coffee sometime. Blessings. FRIENDSAM.

Called Out, Called In: Maggie Harrison's Loving Challenge

There is a prophet in our midst, and her name is Maggie Harrison. Rousing many like fire, making my skin itch at being possibly excluded from this club that I don't even belong to, really (when asked if I am a Quaker, I always respond, 'Not yet.'), but want to think I can put on and off like so much-- clothing? And, nakedness. Taking off the mantle of Religious Identity, making space for the un-knowingness of living INTO something, removing armor and scaffold and hard won (or not so hard won)…See More

My thought would be to provide your child with both options and let them choose day to day... When I was much younger I was dressed both plain and modern, but as I grew older my parents encouraged me to dress mainstream. In my case, I became more…

Plain babies and children

Thumbnail
I am expecting a baby if everything goes well this summer. I just want to hear if there are any thoughts about teaching and showing the plain way to children. The table is open and I just want to hear what you think about this, is it even possible in today's society to raise children like that?As both me and my partner wear mainly clothes of a modern make we will buy 'normal' clothes for our children but try buy a lot of things second hand or try to swap them with others. When our child is a…See More

Daily Bible Reading: Deuteronomy 32 and 1 Corinthians 5

Deuteronomy 32 – The Song of Moses [the number of verses equals the number of letters in the Hebrew alphabet – 23 - times 3. It concludes the teaching books of the Old Testament: “my teaching will fall like drops of rain and form on the earth like dew. My words will fall like showers on young plants, like gentle rain on tender grass” (32:2). From the beginning, the Judeo-Christian vision has been that we humans are here on earth as creations of a “mighty,” “just” and “perfect” God, who seeks…See More
