BTW, that my boyfriend does not wear a tie (considering it frippery) makes him unusual on the Hill. He says the waistcoat has a practical use (makes everything fit his body better without having to buy expensive "fitted" shirts or spend on…

(Urban DC person here) My boyfriend dresses in a way that I consider to be the guy-equivalent of what Quaker Jane calls "modern plain".  He has 8 pairs of black trousers (the 8th to be worn when laundering the other 7), 8 button-up…

This is a very interesting post which touches on a subject that has affected me most significantly in regards to dressing plain.  Job.  Where and what do you work at?  If you are to dress in the historic manner of culturally unique…

I agree with Bridget...we are called to plain dress  because we need it! Whether we are brave enough to answer the call is another matter. I think your letter was beautiful.... and I wish you much joy in your journey.

My thoughts on plain dress are that those of us who are called to it are those of us who need it.  So I do what's needed and trust God to have chosen the right path for me.  He's got a better track record than I do, anyway. ;-)

Kevin-Michael, I found it helpful to take it as a journey. I didn't jump in all the way at once. I started with what was simple and what worked well for me in my lifestyle, which happened to be shirts and pants. As outer garments were retired,…

Thank you so much everyone for your thoughts.  "Testing" is the very thing I've been doing. I have this black, broad brimmed had that I have had for over a decade. I wore it a few times with my late partner (he had one too) to…

Dressing in the traditional, culturally reminiscent pattern of a Quaker Man and living in a city environment will certainly be a challenge.  If one is topped with a broad brimmed hat, gray or brown shirt and broadfall trousers with suspenders,…

Dear Kevin Douglas, I am led to say this: Focus on  what you ARE being asked to do and not how others will respond. That's the first guideline for modern plain I think. What do I need to wear to do this task in a Godly way? Planning for…

Kevin,   Some of what you describe sounds similar to one of my reasons for dressing plain. That is, I dress this way so that I stand out, not in a flashy way, but in such a way that I can't blend in with the crowd so easily. It makes me…

Going Plain....

I feel like I'm coming out of the closet again.  It's actually striking how similar this is to when I started admitting I was gay.  Here and there I would talk about "if" i were gay, or how maybe I'm bisexual.  I would hook up with someone and then rant against homosexuality in Friends Journal or in meeting.  Then I came out, blew the doors off the wall and no Quaker meeting in Greensboro was prepared. Though off topic, I think Friends meetings should very much consider how to be there for…

Is Baltimore Yearly Meeting Christian ... enough?

Baltimore YM is affiliated with Friends United Meeting which acknowledges Jesus as "Teacher and Lord." Honestly, the number of Friends in BYM who have any relationship with or involvement in FUM is nominal. Few individual meetings offer education about the ministries of FUM. How many African, Latin or Midwestern ministers and elders have been invited to monthly meetings to speak, teach or worship? Do our women participate in United Society of Friends Women or our men with Quaker Men? Do we…

Update on Seton Hill Friends Worship Group

Hi Friends

Well our small worship group that started over a year ago as a monthly fellowship is now twice-monthly and we're looking at moving to an old meeting house that is currently operated by a community organization. If that happens, our name will change. We are hoping to also find a meeting to take us under their care. It's very exciting. www.setonhillfriends.org

Why I bother with religion.

We were all driving up Paca Street, just about to turn the corner onto Druid Hill Ave. Destination: home. It was a gorgeous, sunny spring day. All the sounds of the city, the klaxons of impatient drivers, the sirens of cops and firefighters rushing off to help victims or put out fires, real, figurative or just perceived. Of course, with me in the car, the topic of religion arose, the context of which I don't remember. What I do recall, as we turned right onto my street, cherry blossoms blowing… Continue

Called Out, Called In: Maggie Harrison's Loving Challenge

There is a prophet in our midst, and her name is Maggie Harrison. Rousing many like fire, making my skin itch at being possibly excluded from this club that I don't even belong to, really (when asked if I am a Quaker, I always respond, 'Not yet.'), but want to think I can put on and off like so much-- clothing? And, nakedness. Taking off the mantle of Religious Identity, making space for the un-knowingness of living INTO something, removing armor and scaffold and hard won (or not so hard won)…See More

Plain babies and children

I am expecting a baby if everything goes well this summer. I just want to hear if there are any thoughts about teaching and showing the plain way to children. The table is open and I just want to hear what you think about this, is it even possible in today's society to raise children like that?As both me and my partner wear mainly clothes of a modern make we will buy 'normal' clothes for our children but try buy a lot of things second hand or try to swap them with others. When our child is a…See More

Daily Bible Reading: Deuteronomy 32 and 1 Corinthians 5

Deuteronomy 32 – The Song of Moses [the number of verses equals the number of letters in the Hebrew alphabet – 23 - times 3. It concludes the teaching books of the Old Testament: “my teaching will fall like drops of rain and form on the earth like dew. My words will fall like showers on young plants, like gentle rain on tender grass” (32:2). From the beginning, the Judeo-Christian vision has been that we humans are here on earth as creations of a “mighty,” “just” and “perfect” God, who seeks…See More
