Joanna Hoyt replied to Nanna Kapp's discussion 'As a Quaker, what is the function of the scriptures to your faith?'
I wonder somewhat about the fact-fiction distinction as applied to Scripture. I think I partially understand the basis on which people make distinctions. But God is much larger than our language and our minds, so even our 'facts' are…

Joanna Hoyt replied to Patty's discussion 'Right Sharing of Resources and Wealth'
Patty, I'm glad to see this discussion under way, and I don't know how I managed to miss it until just now. The question of right sharing has shaped my life considerably for the past few years. I'm still not where I think I need to…

I also find the Scriptures basic, but not because Fox did. I came to Friends first because of John Woolman's writings, and I became a member because of the deep worship, the faithful lives and the blend of support and challenge that I…

Joanna Hoyt replied to Nanna Kapp's discussion 'As a Quaker, what is the function of the scriptures to your faith?'
I suppose it's a matter of taste. I enjoy several versions of the Bible (King James, New jerusalem, New International..), but find that the Message doesn't work well for me; sometimes it seems to have ironed out the fascinating and…

I didn't grow up Quaker, but I did grow up steeped in the Bible, thanks to my mother. I found Friends in my teens as a result of wrestling with the spiritual consequences of my economic life, partly pushed by the Bible. I've read the whole…

Joanna Hoyt commented on Kevin Camp's blog post 'On Spiritual Gatherings, Retreats, Conferences, and Camps'
I'm glad you've found such strength and inspiration at your gatherings. I've had some similar experiences, and I am somewhat conflicted about them, for a couple of reasons. One: intense emotion is a lot more exciting, and a lot less…

Rickey D. Whetstone commented on Joanna Hoyt's blog post 'whose burdens do we bear?'
Hi Joanna: Thank you for raising this question. I always try to look at the life of Christ . . . for any answer to an issue that might arise in our journey here on earth. And I do no wish to sound critical of anyone. I look at Paul as a man that…

Joanna Hoyt commented on Rickey D. Whetstone's blog post 'George Fox'
Sometimes it's my faults and failures, or my obvious inability to help people I care about, that turns me back toward God in desperation--other times I hide in distractions and avoid God vigorously. Sometimes it's gratitude for the beauty…

whose burdens do we bear?

“Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” –Galatians 6:2“Every man shall bear his own burden.” --Galatians 6:5These two teachings have been on my mind as my Catholic Worker community of Quakers holds its annual review/planning/discernment session. I'm trying to understand what I can and cannot do for other people and what I may and may not ask of them. The long version of this is on my blog at…See More

another new Quaker blog

After enjoying other Friends' blogs for a few years I decided to start one of my own at www.livingasifthetruthwastrue.blogspot.comI'm working on what the blog title suggests, actually getting my life aligned with my convictions instead of just talking about them. (I find talking much easier.) I've been helped in this process by Friends and friends who had rather different convictions but shared the struggle for faithfulness. I'll…See More

And, Alice--I'd be curious to hear more about the practical details of how you're moving into this way of living, if you're willing to share.

Joanna Hoyt commented on Alice M Yaxley's blog post 'Sustainable economy for the future'
Yes, I know I've been called to live more simply, to stop grasping at sources of security other than God, to listen closely to God and be open to my neighbors, to work to provide necessities of life in a way that is not destructive. As for what…

Joanna Hoyt replied to Chandra Blazek's discussion 'Where Do I Fit In?'
Welcome! I hope someone else can give a better answer about the different branches of Quakerism. There's a wide spectrum of belief present in many Friends Meetings. Have you read about the spiritual disciplines practiced by Quakers? I came to…

Joanna Hoyt commented on Alice M Yaxley's blog post 'What would Christians have to do to reduce demand for abortion?'
In the US at least I think that taking away the occasion of abortion would have to include a shift in how our culture portrays sexuality. Over here advertisements constantly play on people's wish to be sexually attractive, or fear of being…

Hello hello!

Nearly finished my PhD now. Had a baby daughter last year! It's hard work trying to do both at the same time.

How are you? You are one of the shining memories of WGYF for me, I still think of what an impression you made on me with your combination of groundedness and freshness.

Daily Bible Reading: Deuteronomy 28 and Galatians 6

Deuteronomy 28 – If you obey the voice of God by observing the law, you will prosper.  Disobedience will bring destruction (28:45). The big word in this chapter, as in others, is if or “provided” or “so long as.”  This is the great condition that hangs over the redemption people.  The word does not disappear under the new covenant either as we sometimes like to think.  “You are my friends if you do as I command you.” (John 15:14).  The convincing power of the gospel is not in its syllogistic…See More

Where ministry meets livelihood

Listen to this post: http://www.turtleboxstories.com/audio/whereministrymeets.mp3 Yesterday was sandwiched between a traditional Bible study and a new women's group on astrology and archetypes. Could I have chosen anything more different? One is an ongoing study of Luke that my mother initiated in December with, mostly, retired women. I felt called to join because when else might I have the chance to do a Bible study…See More
