I would like to start off by sharing that one of my daughters needed a new harp teacher and we could not find one locally.  We turned to research on the internet and found a teacher named Christine Magnussen and cannot be more…

Dear Friends, I am gladdened to see this Virtual Friends School conversation picking up once again.  I thought it may be appropriate to open up a discussion where we can share with one another any 'Friendly' learning opportunities or lessons available.  Please join in and add any of your opportunities or contacts. Let us help one another. In Friendship and Peace,Jan LynSee More

Jan Lyn's Introduction

I am a child of God and consider myself to be a Quaker in Spirit. Due to chronic illness, I do not get out to Meeting in my Philadelphia area often, but when I do, I visit Buckingham Meeting.  I am one of the initial Founders of Quaker Faith and Fellowship online, which has provided me the opportunity to connect with all branches of Friends and has afforded me the ability to Worship online.  I join in here joyfully to engage with other Friends, discuss possible ways to add Friendly ways to our family and home education, as well as learn more about the Convergent Friends movement. I am a Christian Friend with a concern to meld and promote love of the branches of Friends together. I am currently enjoying attending school for Spiritual Formation and Direction.

The Knowing Place

It all began far back on a hill in a field about an acre from my first childhood home. Back then, it was an enchanted place for us kids and we called it 'Indian Hill', which would not be socially acceptable today. Back then life was simpler. I didn’t know it at the time, but I believe this special place to be the birthing of My Knowing Place.

I had to walk an acre or so and cross a crystal clear, bubbling brook. It was worth the walk in my creek sneakers, as mother…

Friends That Thirst

Many people of faith speak about dry or dark times. Even Mother Theresa was found to refer to what was called the "dark night of the soul." I often wonder about these times as Friends where there seems no vocal ministry to be found, no leadings and difficulty discerning abounds. They are the times where we find ourselves waiting and hoping to hear any voice from God.

About three years ago or so now, I found myself desperately seeking any potential sparks of light. I’ve come to… Continue

Jan;
I read MT prayed to share Christ's suffering as on the cross. She was bereft of the presence of God for most of her life as Christ was in his agony. She operated soley on faith. Amazing woman.

Thanks for accepting, Jan Lyn. Yes, I noticed that we have a lot in common. I just started reading your blog, too, and getting a lot from it. Sorry to hear about the pain you have to endure. It must make it very difficult to homeschool. I already find homeschooling very challenging!
Many blessings,
Rosemary

That's great Jan. It is wonderful to connect with Friends all over the world. I met my partner online. He comes from Kansas City. So the Internet really changed my life, and his, tremendously.

Busy day here. It is the Folk Festival here in Wimborne which is a huge affair with participants from all around the world. So we have friends coming over to watch the parade.

Hello :)

Yes, we had to cancel the last MfW at my home because of snow, but there is another scheduled for this Sunday. Still pretty flattened by this chest infection - onto my second course of big antibiotics and steroids!

Thinking of you :) xxx

Hi Jan. Not having grown up Quaker, it's been an interesting experience for me. Unfortunately, we don't incorporate enough of the traditional Quaker practices as I would like, but I've learned and grown nevertheless.

Called Out, Called In: Maggie Harrison's Loving Challenge

There is a prophet in our midst, and her name is Maggie Harrison. Rousing many like fire, making my skin itch at being possibly excluded from this club that I don't even belong to, really (when asked if I am a Quaker, I always respond, 'Not yet.'), but want to think I can put on and off like so much-- clothing? And, nakedness. Taking off the mantle of Religious Identity, making space for the un-knowingness of living INTO something, removing armor and scaffold and hard won (or not so hard won)…See More

Congratulations Elin!  I don't have children so I'm going to speculate, but I don't think raising your kids differently from other people is going to injure them at all. Of course I am surrounded by people who are doing that very…

Elin - Congratulations! The bigger question you are raising is how to bring up spiritually healthy children in an unhealthy world! We have nine children and homeschooled all of them right from the start. They are amazing people and I know for a fact…

My thought would be to provide your child with both options and let them choose day to day... When I was much younger I was dressed both plain and modern, but as I grew older my parents encouraged me to dress mainstream. In my case, I became more…

Plain babies and children

Thumbnail
I am expecting a baby if everything goes well this summer. I just want to hear if there are any thoughts about teaching and showing the plain way to children. The table is open and I just want to hear what you think about this, is it even possible in today's society to raise children like that?As both me and my partner wear mainly clothes of a modern make we will buy 'normal' clothes for our children but try buy a lot of things second hand or try to swap them with others. When our child is a…See More

Daily Bible Reading: Deuteronomy 32 and 1 Corinthians 5

Deuteronomy 32 – The Song of Moses [the number of verses equals the number of letters in the Hebrew alphabet – 23 - times 3. It concludes the teaching books of the Old Testament: “my teaching will fall like drops of rain and form on the earth like dew. My words will fall like showers on young plants, like gentle rain on tender grass” (32:2). From the beginning, the Judeo-Christian vision has been that we humans are here on earth as creations of a “mighty,” “just” and “perfect” God, who seeks…See More
