"Labyrinths are my favorite, Iris! I just moved into a studio space in a re-purposed school in my neighborhood. One goal is to open a nurturing art exploration for neighborhood under-served kids. My dream is to, eventually, create some sort of…"

Walking in Circles

“Our lives are an apprenticeship to the truth that around every circle another can be drawn. That there is no end in nature but every end is a beginning.”                                                              ~  Ralph Waldo EmersonI spent part of May 5 walking in circles. Sometimes such circuitous movement is a…See More

Afterthought #4 - Pilgrimage to Manzanar

(The main Manzanar Pilgrimage event in 2011 | Photo: Zach Behrens/KCET)     Last month I blogged about the 70th anniversary of the opening of Manzanar, a concentration camp in southern California.  Grace Ito Coan, a member of Sacramento Friends Meeting, was among the U.S. residents of Japanese ancestry…See More

Conflict

Conflict. Disagreement. Opposing viewpoints. I don’t much like any of them, especially when they involve me and those I’m in relationship with. Some people tell me they like controversy, spirited opposition, debate and argument. They say it energizes them, excites them, gets their juices flowing. All that conflict does for me is make my stomach churn. So, at Meeting last Sunday, when our Worship-Sharing time focused on queries about resolving conflict, I did a lot of deep breathing.   As we…See More

"Right, Cathy. I'm sure that Kathleen was paraphrasing that one.   And yes, I'm well, enjoying the gift of focusing on writing.  Hoping the same for you. "

The Job of the Writer

Ten years ago, I printed up business cards with the title Writer under my name thinking that if that’s what the card says, that’s what I am.  Now, I don't have to read that card to know that writing is my job, but some days, at the end of a writing session, I’ll leave my desk with doubts about whether I’m called to this work.…See More

"Courageous and wise you are, Iris! I could not help but think of the Frederick Beuchner quote: “The place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet.” Hope you're well."

Afterthought #1

A writing friend, Charlotte Morganti, blogs regularly at Morganti Writes. Most Fridays she posts an “Itty Bitty”— typically a quote or anecdote and a few words of her own reflection. They often inspire me as I head into the weekend.      Charlotte’s Itty Bitties remind me of a practice in some Quaker meetings of a time for “Afterthoughts.”  After meeting for worship ends, silence continues for a few more minutes during which members are invited to…See More

OPEN

Five men holding cardboard signs huddled together, urging passersby to join them in protest against financial institutions. A month earlier, they had been among hundreds of others camped out in New York City’s Zuccotti Park.  But on this biting cold post-Christmas day, they were the only ones who had ventured through the maze of metal fencing and past security guards to continue a vigil against corporate greed and social inequality. The sight of the barricade snaking around the park’s perimeter…See More

Profile Information

About Me
For most of my adult life, writing has been a vehicle for me to understand what I believe, feel, question, and know. For the past ten years, I've recognized writing as a Spirit-led creative process through which I come to know God, to understand God’s presence in my life, and to minister to others. It is both my work and my spiritual discipline. As a writer, I strive to give voice to the untold stories of ordinary people. Those stories are often the most extraordinary and the most meaningful. I never know who or what might call to me for telling, but I’ve learned to heed those stirrings of a good story. My first book, Hands at Work, was inspired by a showing of Summer Moon Scriver’s black-and-white photographs of hands. They suggested to me a passion for the kinds of work that have become rare for many Americans and that these were people nourished by manual labor. I immediately wanted to give voice to their stories and to others who work with their hands. www.handsworking.com.
