About Me
My affirmation with Quaker faith and the peace testimony occured during the Vietnam War era while working student protest booths for both the Student Mobilization Committen to End the War in Vietman and the American Friends Service Committee, counseling students on their draft status with local draft boards of the Selective Service system. I developed a hightened political and religious sense that involuntary military conscription was morally wrong, that the individual right to resist military conscription is a basic human right, and consequently found myself having agreement with many Quaker leadings on other matters of religious faith concerning ones direct experience with God.

Jim Corbett, Quaker philosopher, professor, and goat heard who co-founded the Sanctuary Movement in the 1980's, wrote that since god is inconceivable, any conception of god we conjure up, and any theology or dogma we may believe in, is an idol, no less than the golden calf. Once we have such a conception, we worship the concept rather than god. Moreover, it is by definition a false idol. Thus, reading the bible for the treasure of human wisdom is fine, but revering the bible (or koran)  as something "holy" is worshiping a false idol. Worshiping a man, Jesus, as god would seem to be the ultimate in idol worship. These idols have caused, and continue to cause, so much harm as peoples argue and war over whose idol is the real one. I think waiting in silence, without preconceptions, for the god of creation to speak to us, if indeed god does such things, is the only logical course of action.

Thank you Friend David:

It is a humble talent, not much appreciated by others I seem to know.  Still I live my truth and honor what I'm feeling by putting those feelings into bits and pieces of colored cloth.

I truly appreciate your comment and insight.  I often see men at quilt shows, surely the husbands of women quilters who then sometimes begin to quilt themselves.  (My own husband has no such interest.  He thinks giving a quilt as a gift is a stupid idea  [his words]).  Very sad, I know. . . .

I have no family to hand my quilts down to so have given them to other girlfriends for birthdays or Christmas and such and was always much too busy to inscribe my name or date upon completion.   Now with your words I think I'll try to do that more in the future.  It would be a wonderful and helpful reminder as years go by that someone actually took needle in hand and created this special quilt.

Your point is well taken that today everything in our world is treated as disposable.  Unfortunately that even includes beautiful quilts I've made for others when they did not find value in them.

Thank you for your most thoughtful response and your appreciation of things hand-made with cotton and batting.
