The Prophetic Calling: It’ll Break Your Heart

“The only thing that truly defines Friends as a distinct group and not just a bunch of Unitarians or Christians or a secular social club is that all True Quakers are committed to the process of gettin’ naked as a step in the longer path of being clothed in righteousness, which means a return to right order, or the Gospel Order, or the Kingdom of Heaven, or the Garden or Eden, or total Liberation, or WHATEVER YOU WANT TO CALL IT.” Maggie Harrison…See More

Jesus Christ: A Integral Mythical Re-telling

(Note: this blog posting was originally written for the integrallife.com site, which is focused on what is known as "integral life practice" a synthesis of Eastern and Western mystical traditions. I am something of an outlier there as I am here, being a nontheist in the midst of theists. However, the threads there drew me into reflection on the story of Jesus and what…See More

Universalism & Other Faiths

Many liberal Friends have adopted universalism and less-Christocentric theologies. This is a place to discuss the place of non-traditional beliefs among modern Friends. Tag: universalism

Not sure what is happening in the midwest. Out here on the West coast, I don't think Christian Friends are asking meetings to become Christians. We understand and appreciate the diversity of meetings. In fact, the the efforts to avoid offending…

It is interesting Charley, I think we might also have to labour over what we call a Christian meeting.  Many liberal meetings would call themselves Christian, yet more conservative meetings would not call them such.  This is what I mean…

I'm sorry that  I never responded. It has been a busy few weeks for me and I let this thread slip out of mind.   Liberal Quaker meetings do need to work on being more welcoming to Christians. However, that does not mean we all will…

Isabel -- Then I think this is an issue that the whole Meeting should deal with as a community.  Unfortunately, many meetings, being not so good at conflict resolution, run from such conflict and hide, and that is how such meetings get the…

The Infinite Depths of Radical Love

Everyday a new horror arises to haunt one’s soul. Death, suffering, and powerlessness challenge even the strongest hearts. The struggle to hold on to hope, courage, and life itself must be won anew against each shocking sorrow.

It is no wonder that many turn from facing the depths of the abyss. Seeking for some relief from constant sadness, a once-sensitive person retreats into private pleasures. It is so tempting to let the truth drift away over the far-off horizon.

A… Continue

Jesus Among Liberal Friends

It's not a secret that I am an ex-Christian liberal Quaker. I didn't leave the faith as a wounded soul with a grudge against every believer, though I acknowledge that there are many out there with that sort of experience. I was raised in a very dysfunctional Pentecostal family and escaped from that drama in my early 20s to a Mennonite intentional community for 10 years.

That community was a most…

Called Out, Called In: Maggie Harrison's Loving Challenge

There is a prophet in our midst, and her name is Maggie Harrison. Rousing many like fire, making my skin itch at being possibly excluded from this club that I don't even belong to, really (when asked if I am a Quaker, I always respond, 'Not yet.'), but want to think I can put on and off like so much-- clothing? And, nakedness. Taking off the mantle of Religious Identity, making space for the un-knowingness of living INTO something, removing armor and scaffold and hard won (or not so hard won)…See More

Plain babies and children

I am expecting a baby if everything goes well this summer. I just want to hear if there are any thoughts about teaching and showing the plain way to children. The table is open and I just want to hear what you think about this, is it even possible in today's society to raise children like that?As both me and my partner wear mainly clothes of a modern make we will buy 'normal' clothes for our children but try buy a lot of things second hand or try to swap them with others. When our child is a…See More

Daily Bible Reading: Deuteronomy 32 and 1 Corinthians 5

Deuteronomy 32 – The Song of Moses [the number of verses equals the number of letters in the Hebrew alphabet – 23 - times 3. It concludes the teaching books of the Old Testament: “my teaching will fall like drops of rain and form on the earth like dew. My words will fall like showers on young plants, like gentle rain on tender grass” (32:2). From the beginning, the Judeo-Christian vision has been that we humans are here on earth as creations of a “mighty,” “just” and “perfect” God, who seeks…See More
