Aaron J Levitt replied to Karen Mercer's discussion 'Convergence Movement/ The purpose of Quaker Quaker'
"Hi everyone, As someone who was once the only 'out' Jew serving on a big ship in the U.S. Navy, it seems to me that that people of faith (for lack of a better word) are always disciples and are always teaching…"

Aaron J Levitt replied to Karen Mercer's discussion 'Convergence Movement/ The purpose of Quaker Quaker'
"No problem; even actual indignation would have perfectly OK, at least in my books.  :) Just to give some context to my comments, I have studied post-WWI and Nazi Germany in some real depth and from several disciplinary perspectives, but…"

"I never thought you meant to suggest such a thing, and I apologize if I gave that impression. The parallel you drew did strike me as rather harsh, relative to its foundation, but I've certainly done as much myself."

Aaron J Levitt replied to Aaron Clark's discussion 'The Ultimate Forgiveness'

"Hi Forrest, Your perspective seems to have much in common with my own, but part of what I was trying to suggest in my post is that there is a necessarily high degree of ambiguity in these matters, due to intrinsic limitations of both the…"

Forrest Curo replied to Aaron J Levitt's discussion 'Language as Idolatry'
"The central point which that Name hints at, to anyone attuned to seeing it this way, is that God is (among other things) what you might call 'raw existence': "That which knows/says 'I am' in every sentient being." The…"

"Hi, Bill, and thanks for taking the time to respond! As regards your question, I'm not sure, and I wonder if the answer depends on just how "primitive" one wants to get. It's not clear to me how Jesus understood his role, which…"

William F Rushby replied to Aaron J Levitt's discussion 'Language as Idolatry'
"Hello, Aaron!  It seems to me that the "scandal" of Christianity is the claim that the great I Am  broke into human history and expressed Himself through a concrete human person, Jesus Christ.  Isn't this what the…"

Aaron J Levitt replied to Karen Mercer's discussion 'Convergence Movement/ The purpose of Quaker Quaker'
"Hi Karen, I'd say that the Nazis (though not necessarily all Fascists) selectively promoted and undermined various elements of tradition and dogma towards a variety of ends, rather than generally attempting to undermine all dogma and tradition.…"

Language as idolatry

One of the more frequently appearing, and theologically emphasized, names of God in the Hebrew bible is generally translated “I am that I am”, or sometimes “I am that is”. The point, I believe, is generally taken to be that the transcendent God cannot be truly described in human language. A second name of God, YHVH, often thought of in Judaism as in some sense the “most holy” appellation, is not even pronounced. One of the reasons offered for this is that a transcendent God cannot be truly…See More

"Thanks, Isabel; it's certainly a fuzzy area! I think that, during the Cold War, we (meaning most of the world) understandably got in the habit of interpreting everything political in terms of a "left/right spectrum" that doesn't…"

Aaron J Levitt replied to Francis X. O'Hara's discussion 're: What do you do in silent worship?'

Aaron J Levitt replied to Francis X. O'Hara's discussion 're: What do you do in silent worship?'

Hello, Aaron!  I have not read your post.  I am not a member of the group where you submitted it.  However, I hope you won't feel too badly about words written in the heat of the moment, but later regretted.  It happens to many people, myself included!
