In my history of being part of faith communitie. realized that those who are “group”-oriented seem more clubish, more “come in, be one of us”, more fractured, more self-interested. Those that were “ministry”-0riented thought of the bigger picture, had more awareness of the each other, practiced more over-arching hospitality. And in my faith gathering we have many ministries, but no. lot of group. but the places where there are groups, we se
It's sometimes hard reading, dealing with homophobia, Intellectually indefensible young-earth Creationism, guest speakers like Sean Hannity and Karl Rove, followin. 46 page code of conduct that regulates every aspect of their social lives, occasional racism, an. lot of stories that sure didn't come up in the Quaker meeting he grew up in.martin_kelley 2009-06-26T16:25:55Z
As part of our class we want to give students an opportunity to hear your voice and thoughts too! Over the next six weeks, we'll pos. new survey pertaining to the next class topic every week. The questions are intended to serve at least two purposes. First, they are information gathering questions so that we can get input from the wider Quaker world. Second, we hope that these questions serve a. set of queries of sort, prompting you, as
I hope you'll consider the possibility that neither you nor the Quaker community is "bad" or "wrong" for not having already looked at this more, or not having created more age/race/social class diversity. hope you'll also consider that our faith community ha. lot to rejoice in, in terms of the stand that we have taken for equality and the ways that has influenced us.Would you be willing to invite people to partic
A blog fro. U.S. Friend doing service work in Haiti. "A look at the power of sharing and the power of God, and how they can help folks in Haiti and the US to learn from each other. Do the cultures of Haiti and the USA each have some of the solutions to some of the social ills in the other country?"martin_kelley 2009-06-04T15:19:00Z
Whe. picked it up in the bookstore. was worried that it just b. trainwreck of cultural conflict, but flipping through it was clear the train stayed on the tracks. In fact, it's easily the best "outside looking in" book I've read on this wing of evangelical Christianity.martin_kelley 2009-05-06T16:23:50Z
Perhaps we need to talk a. community about what that mean. define expectations. Perhaps we need to evaluate where these practicalities are to be lived ou. small groups versus larger congregation, etc. And perhaps we need to repent, to apologize, to tak. posture of humility and hospitality. Or we can just let the slow fade continue, and our words can continue to lose their power; but this Mama Bear won’t live that way with her boys.martin_
A core truth of Quaker theology and experience is the direct relationship of God with humanity. Whether as individual seekers or in the collective practice of worship, God can be experienced anywhere, at any time, and all people can be called on for the work of ministry. The experience of God is both sustaining and transformative, as the divine Seed in each person is met and searched and nourished directly by the Inward Light of God.martin_kelley
I've taste. lot of solidarity. There'. lot of people that have come here looking for encouragement and to overcom. little bit of stagnation and get past some of the fears they have in going deeper in relationship to their meetings and relationship to the history of Friends and the tools and resources it offers them.martin_kelley 2009-02-24T02:31:49Z
Part of what young people, people of color, and all of our other visitors are looking for i. community where the things they can contribute are not only treated with respect, but treated as something truly needed and wanted by the community. It's okay to tell us that some of our contributions to the community are not helpful, but that needs to be balanced with help and encouragement in making contributions that are helpful.martin_kelley 20
Whe. find myself living life unintentionally, whe. find myself not being able to answer questions, whe. don’t know wh. do wha. do. need to reevaluate. Bu. hope that within my community (family, church, and the Yearly Meeting) there will be space intentionally created to provid. foundation for growth an. challenge to act. Though my children will have different experiences tha. did, and though they may express their faith and va
1. Say hi. This should probably go without saying, bu. have heard more than one older Friend say that they are nervous about approaching YAFs. 2. Remember why you becam. Quaker. What was it that initially drew you to Friends? 3. Talk about your experience of the Spirit.martin_kelley 2009-02-07T22:54:51Z
It is that summoning to radicalness whic. want my kids to get out of their religious education--a call to seek the Kingdom of God before all else. An. think, frankly, that attending First day school may not be the best way for them to get that. don't thin. got it from Sunday School. got it from reading the Sermon on the Mount. think that maybe my kids would be better served by seeing me live that life of Christian devotion.martin
Then come. second stage where the young Friend decides that this whole religion thing is your stuff not his/hers. They may start to resist attending meeting. It’s boring and dry and meaningless. Often at this stage Quaker values are appreciated but not necessarily the faith that goes with them. Youth gatherings are mostly social gatherings. Then it happens. God works on their heart. They get it. They understand what Jesus’ message is all about.
To me bein. Quaker has always been about acting according to my conscience. didn’t grow up i. Bible tradition, although some of my family is Christian, an. couldn’t tell you all about the life of George Fox. Rather. appreciate the silent worship and the opportunity it gives me to frequently re-evaluate wher. am going with my life and whether that direction is in line with my conscience.martin_kelley 2009-01-20T21:59:50Z
