Introduction to Friends

About Friends

Quakerinfo.org is a good introduction to the varieties of Friends beliefs.

The Quakers wikipedia entry has been written primarily by Friends. It's trying to take on a big job: describing all the varieties of Friends worldwide while maintain a neutral point of view. It's not perfect but it's useful.

Books of Faith and Practice: most regional Friends bodies produce official books of discipline, commonly called "Faith and Practice" that summarizes beliefs and explains Quaker process.

Practical Advice for Those Seeking Quakers is a useful resource put together by Quaker Jane. She also has complied a helpful list of Advices and Queries for Isolated Friends.

Finding Friends:

United States and Canada: There are about two dozen regional groups ("yearly meetings") in the US and Canada, sometimes overlapping and often representing different forms of Quakerism. Quakermaps.com is our favorite DIY project to map Friends in the United States. Friends World Committee: Americas has an online map and electronic directory of Friends meetings and churches. Friends General Conference has a listing of mostly liberal unprogrammed Friends meetings.

National Yearly Meetings: In some parts of the world yearly meetings cover the entire country. The best way to find Friends meetings there is to visit the main yearly meeting website. This is true for the relatively large Britain, Australia and Ireland yearly meetings.

Friends World Committee for Consultation: This is the national coordinating body of Friends. They have four sections: the Americas, Africa, Asia & West Pacific and Europe and each has contact information for Friends in its geographic scope.

QuakerQuaker Listings: We'd be remiss if we didn't point out that you can search the membership of QuakerQuaker by geography. We've made a handy list broken down by cities, regions and countries. That page also lists our regional group pages which we hope will faciliate local organization for isolated Friends and seekers.

Learning More:

Friends are an experiential religious tradition and there are many flavors and types. The best way to get to know us is to visit as many Friends meetings and churches as you can. We have many discussion groups here on QuakerQuaker where you can ask questions or eavesdrop in on conversations. Most Group Pages have links to organizations and websites addressing it's topic.

Interesting comments above: 'weirdest thing' and 'bizarre.' Then I thought back to my own first Quaker meeting at about 12 years old in Iowa as part of a Sunday school exploration of other religions. That's pretty much where my head was. Fifty-some years later I attended my second meeting and knew within minutes that spiritually I had come home after a long time in the wilderness. Opening to the Light, the power and grace of silent seeking, social engagement, and the respect for other people's relationship with God as they have found it all make being a Quaker the right place for me.

I attended an unprogramed meeting in Eau Claire, WI.  I did not feel out of place and the quiet was really nice.  This is one thing that attracted me to Quakerism.  I have attended churches but they are so full of talk that I felt the voice of God totally missing.  I enjoyed it and plan to return when the drive isn't so hazardous.
