Primitive Christianity Revived, Again

Hello, all...

This is only loosely related to this group, perhaps. I am hoping no one will mind overly much. I plan to attend a conference at Pendle Hill (in PA) in August, and hope to travel one day early to go visit Amish country. I would like to find a room for one night in an Amish home, but realize this may not be possible. Alternately, I would love to find a bed and breakfast situation (official or otherwise) somewhere nearby. I would prefer the situation to be pretty simple, and am very comfortable with a rustic household (no electricity, cabin, etc.). Does anyone have any ideas for me? I am a rather plain, head-covering, lesbian quaker. I am aware I may need to not share my lesbian identity with certain households... this would be fine for such a short-term arrangement.

Thanks much for any ideas or leads you might share.

Hi Kristen,
If you Google around you should be able to find some B&Bs. When we've researched before there were a slew of them. We've stayed at these places:
http://www.verdantview.com/
http://www.thegreenacresfarm.com/

Both were welcoming hosts. While we were obviously a straight nuclear family we had enough lifestyle eccentricities to go around. As with any good B&B, you're also guesting with other guests so you never quite know where morning conversation will go.

We were looking primarily for farms so the boys would have some concept of where milk comes from so I'm not sure either of our places is what you're looking for. But you'll see that Lancaster County has a pretty extensive B&B network that's can be navigated online.
Martin,

Thank you. I had found a bunch of B &Bs online, but many were much more elaborate than I had hoped. I was asking here in case folks knew of smaller, simpler places that might not have much of an online presence. :) I will resort to the fancier options if needed.
Try Osceola Mill House. My husband and I have stayed there a few times and it's in a quiet setting next to Amish farms, but still close to Rt. 30 and the major areas. It's more near the Paradise area. Very nice, a bathroom with your room, but no tv's, just one in the main living room downstairs for all to share. It was very quiet to stay there and we woke up to hearing horse and buggies and a few cars is all.

They may also be able to arrange a meal with an Amish family if given advance notice as well!

Best wishes for happy travels,
MJ

I wish I could have homeschooled, but here it was not permitted to me by law. School choice is only permitted to two parent families that can afford for one to stay home. I don't know what clothing is like where you are but it should be…

Thanks for your gratulations and your input. Homeschooling is by virtue of our new curriculum very hard, something I even as a teacher am very critical about. I think that most people do not understand that there are many pros to it and think it is…

Called Out, Called In: Maggie Harrison's Loving Challenge

There is a prophet in our midst, and her name is Maggie Harrison. Rousing many like fire, making my skin itch at being possibly excluded from this club that I don't even belong to, really (when asked if I am a Quaker, I always respond, 'Not yet.'), but want to think I can put on and off like so much-- clothing? And, nakedness. Taking off the mantle of Religious Identity, making space for the un-knowingness of living INTO something, removing armor and scaffold and hard won (or not so hard won)…See More

First of all, Mazel Tov!  Prayers to your pregnancy, may it be a healthy, happy event in your life. With my children, I have raised them with my beliefs, explained why I dress Plain for worship, and leave them with what I have taught in hopes…
