In my history of being part of faith communitie. realized that those who are “group”-oriented seem more clubish, more “come in, be one of us”, more fractured, more self-interested. Those that were “ministry”-0riented thought of the bigger picture, had more awareness of the each other, practiced more over-arching hospitality. And in my faith gathering we have many ministries, but no. lot of group. but the places where there are groups, we se
She told me she felt seminary wa. bubble and now as she entered the real world she should have been prepared for this opposition to women in ministry. Her next comment after being surprised that she was surprised was: “but they are Quakers!” That made me really sad. Women in ministry should not be an issue for the Society of Friends.martin_kelley 2009-06-29T16:20:29Z
I've likely mentioned before tha. am often astounded by the fact that someone else at Meeting will speak what is in my head and heart. This was kind of like that, except magnified 100 times. No question that there was change...two different Meetings nearly 700 miles apart. But there was also continuity...one week later the same thread.martin_kelley 2009-06-05T22:09:03Z
I see many parallels between Pentecost and Quaker worship. We gather and wait i. house for the Holy Spirit to come upon us, and we speak as the Spirit prompts us. We may not literally see tongues of fire above each others' heads, but we do believe that there is the Light of God in every person. sometimes think that Quakers are too comfortable in our silence, that we are not paying attention the call of the Spirit in our lives.martin_kell

I received an unexpected blessing in the mail. It wa. slim volume called "Counsel to the Christian Traveller: also Meditations and Experiences" by William Shewen. opened it and started reading and found great drafts of refreshment for my soul.chrismsf 2009-04-23T05:40:45Z
...Whe. see that people are getting together in the church basement after services to plan out who’s going to move in with whom after people start to lose their jobs and their houses, whe. see that churches are beginning to plan out how they will be eating together, then the church will seem relevant to me...robinmohr 2009-04-17T05:31:48Z
I'm talking heart pounding, sweating, hallucination moments of spirituality in the midst of my ordinary life. Seizures probably, but... once you've had them, you have little tolerance for milk-toast testimonies of spirituality.chrismsf 2009-04-17T05:28:05Z
This vocal ministry stuff is just plain weird at times. I've begun to recognize the signs that God ha. message for me to speak. center deeply as soon a. enter worship. Deep, deep, deep without trying, without knowing. Nothing distracts me or intrudes. It's like no other time in worship at meeting or by myself. message forms and won't leave. Whil. can’t say that I’ve ever had as dramatic experience as the first-generation apostles as described by Luke, over the years I’ve had enough glimpses of the Living Christ’s presence in the midst of the waiting community tha. have kept coming to wait with them.robinmohr 2009-04-12T03:21:09Z

I thin. passed the point sometime ago where it's fruitful for me to sit in retreats talking about things. For some, they are the perfect place to be on the journey, but for me, at this point. think need to be out more actively serving. Often the talk just saddens me, and seems to come out of ego, my own as much as anyone else's.martin_kelley 2009-03-12T00:58:28Z
Quakers were very much abou. process of transformation that put an end to the evil deeds throug. spiritual transformation that took, for example, away the occasion for all wars. This meant that people's states of mind would not include, any longer, that which moved them to war. This drove the Protestant authorities nuts just to hear. People are too depraved for this kind of "progress," in the Protestant ideology. An. think th

So many preachers in this country seem tell us that if we pray, nothing bad will happen to us. Wars, trouble, and famine may come to other nations, but not to us because we are special. think this kind of preaching may be more dangerous in the end than boring or moralistic sermons. Friends hav. strong tradition of prophetic witness and we recognize that anyone may be called to minister. hope that in the days ahead, those who feel called to
God often speaks to me during worship to shed light on issue. am struggling with or showing me way. can serve others, but since these messages are for me there’s no point in sharing them out loud with those gathered. Messages intended for vocal ministry are different. The minister gets the letter and the name on the envelope is not the minister’s. Usually the minister can't read the address. But they know that if they speak, the addresse
