Primitive Christianity Revived, Again

Here are some simple insect repellents made from herbs:
Tansy: This herb is commonly used for repelling many different kinds of insects. It can be used a fly repellent when hung in bunches near doorways and window (Use it in your barn! It works to protect animals too!). To repel ants, sprinkle dried and crumbled tansy flower and leaf around the house foundation, cupboards, and anywhere in their path. Warning: Tansy is toxic to animals and humans when eaten in large amounts. Make sure if you use tansy you hang it somewhere people and animals wont munch on it.
Moth Repellents: Tansy, rosemary, wormwood, lavender, citrus peel, aromatic cedar, spearmint, & patchouli are all moth-repelling herbs. You can use a single herb of your choice (or make a combination) and tie them into little cloth bags to lie among linens, woolens, in blanket chests, or from hangers in the closet.
Flies & Other Vermin: Peppermint and pennyroyal can be hung in bunches to ward off flies. They can also be crumbled after they have dried and be used like tansy to ward off mice and ants. To keep fleas from bugging cats, make a small cloth collar and fill with pennyroyal, citrus peel, & eucalyptus. These herbs can be stuffed into bed pillows for dogs & cats also. Many herbalists suggest rubbing pennyroyal oil behind the ears of your pet where they can't lick it off (for fleas) and this does work well, but the distilled oil is VERY dangerous if used around pregnant women. Do not used this collar or the oil if your pet is pregnant.
Mosquitoes: For mosquitoes and no-see-ums a handful of fresh pennyroyal, tansy, basil, lavender, marigold (the common boarder plant) thyme or yarrow crushed and then rubbed on the arms, legs, hats, etc., makes a effective repellent. For pregnant women, a lavender insect-repellent spray (see below) would make a good choice.
Insect-repelling spray: Steep 1 ounce dried lavender or other herbs of choice (see the list above) in 1 pint rubbing alcohol or 100-proof vodka for 7-10 days; strain, then pour to halfway in a spray bottle and fill the rest with water. Carefully label. Do not ingest. Spray as needed. Can be used on clothing.
OR
Fill a spray bottle with common prepared witch hazel and add several drops of lemon-eucalyptus oil and shake well. Label and spray away! Make sure that you use lemon-eucalyptus oil and NOT lemon AND eucalyptus oils. You could always use lavender oil, too! (Safest for pregnant women)
